Data Studio Joins
Optim Family
Enhanced toolset
offers increased
integration with
extended support
IBM has expanded and extended the Optim portfolio. The IBM Optim line now includes Optim Development Studio; Optim pureQuery Runtime; Optim Database Administrator
for DB2 for Linux, UNIX, and Windows; and
Optim Query Tuner. Formerly encompassed
under the Data Studio name, the Optim family
also offers new performance-tuning capabilities;
a common environment for developing Oracle,
DB2, and Informix applications; and enhanced
portfolio integration.
Optim Development Studio V2.2 and Optim
pureQuery Runtime for Linux, UNIX, and
Windows V2.2 both have extended support to
Oracle databases, including native support
for PL/SQL stored procedures. As a result,
organizations doing development for multiple
environments can use a single database
development environment across Oracle, DB2,
and Informix. Additionally, these releases support
IBM DB2 9.7 and its new SQL compatibility features
(see “SQL Compatibility in DB2 9.7,” this issue).
Optim pureQuery Runtime improves SQL
best practices by providing conversion and
consolidation of literals. Use of literals instead of
variables or parameters is generally discouraged
within SQL because it makes each statement
unique, which drives down cache hit ratios. Now,
multiple statements that had each been unique
due to the use of literals will be consolidated into
a single statement using parameters to improve
application performance. In addition, Optim
pureQuery Runtime V2.2 introduces a more
lifecycle-driven means for capturing application
SQL, simplifying the use of pureQuery over time.
This release also introduces the ability to configure
data source parameters on the application server
online, increasing the flexibility of managing a
pureQuery deployment.
Optim Database Administrator for DB2 for
Linux, UNIX, and Windows simplifies DB2
database administration by providing an easy-to-use interface and built-in analysis to automate
complex database changes and migrations with
confidence. This release extends support for large
database environments and disaster recovery.

IBM Acquires Exeros
Data discovery technology helps
transform data into a strategic
business asset
IBM announced that it acquired
data discovery software vendor
Exeros in May. The acquisition
will help organizations using the
IBM Information Management
software portfolio to better
manage their data.
Exeros technology automatically
uncovers hidden relationships
between databases, helping
users make sense of disparate
sources without the labor-intensive
process of manually mapping
data. This capability helps
generate new levels of intelligence
that can identify emerging market
trends and help predict business
outcomes.
“All organizations today are
faced with the daunting challenge
of turning massive amounts of
information into insights to guide
their businesses, but many are
held back by the complexity of
corporate data sources,” said
Ambuj Goyal, general manager,
IBM Information Management.
“The combination of IBM and
Exeros will enable companies
to more intelligently manage
their data across all formats and
computing platforms, creating a
smarter enterprise.”
Over the next several months,
IBM intends to integrate Exeros
with the IBM Information
Management software portfolio.
The acquisition will also further
the IBM Information On Demand
initiative, which helps customers
use information as a competitive
and strategic business asset.
In addition, the acquisition will
support the recently announced
IBM Business Analytics and
Optimization consulting practice
to meet growing demand for
advanced analytics capabilities
to create new, more intelligent
business systems.
